The Australia Pacific LNG Project is a coal seam gas (CSG) to liquefied natural gas (LNG) project delivering a cleaner, more sustainable energy source to customers in Australia and Asia.

Australia Pacific LNG is already the largest producer of gas from coal seams in Australia, supplying gas to power stations to produce lower emissions electricity to major industrial customers, homes and businesses in South East Queensland.

The Project consists of three key parts:

  1. Further development of Australia Pacific LNG's gas fields in the Surat and Bowen Basins in south-west and central Queensland.
  2. Construction of a 530km gas transmission pipeline from the gas fields to an LNG facility on Curtis Island off the coast of Gladstone.
  3. An LNG facility on Curtis Island off the coast of Gladstone, with the first two gas production trains processing up to 9 million tonnes per annum.

Santos GLNG is a pioneering venture that will produce natural gas from Queensland’s coal seams and convert it into liquefied natural gas (LNG) for sale to world markets. It involves ongoing gas field development in the Surat and Bowen Basins, a 420-kilometre gas transmission pipeline, and the construction of an LNG plant on Curtis Island, near Gladstone.

Santos GLNG is led by Australian company Santos, in partnership with three of the world’s leading energy companies – PETRONAS from Malaysia, Total from France, and KOGAS from South Korea.

Hay Point Coal Terminal Expansion - HPX1 and HPX2

BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance’s (BMA) Hay Point Coal Terminal is a major coal export facility located on the coast south of Mackay, Queensland. It is the most

efficient coal terminal in the world (measured by throughput/storage capacity).

Project Description

To match increases in mining production in the region, as well as intensified international demand, the facility is progressing a two phased upgrade (HPX1 and HPX2) from the existing capacity of 34 Mtpa to 44 Mtpa (a 29 per cent increase). BMA and Aurecon Hatch worked to develop engineering solutions to increase throughput capacity while minimising disruption during reconstruction works to ensure that the terminal’s reputation remains intact.

Scope of Services

Aurecon Hatch provided complete EPCM services for HPX1 and HPX2. Aurecon Hatch has been involved in this project since concept study phases in 1996, providing Concept Studies (CS) (as BHP Engineering), a Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) and a Feasibility Study (FS). Aurecon Hatch has also undertaken all of the design for both phases (excluding the stacker reclaimers).

To increase capacity of the terminal the following was required:

  • An increase of the inloading rate to 6,000 tph from 4,500 tph
  • The construction of two new stacker reclaimers, upgrading of two others and dismantling of one stacker
  • An increase in stockyard capacity from 1.0 MT to 1.4 MT
  • The removal of one million tonnes of surplus material that were used to form screening bunds at the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal Project (DBCT). The upgrade of majority of stockyard conveyors (16 new, 8 upgraded, 5 untouched)

Project Highlights

The project experienced fast tracked construction:

  • HPX1 was completed in 27 months from sanction and HPX2 is scheduled to be completed in 25 months from sanction
  • 13 of 15 shutdown completion targets were met (86 per cent)

In June 2012, the smelter completed a $720 million upgrade - the Boyne Smelters Development (BSD) project. This project included building a new carbon bake furnace to replace two existing furnaces, re-building the smelter’s third furnace, an upgrade of crane runways and installation of new overhead cranes, as well as the installation of an automated alumina distribution system in reduction lines 1&2.

The new carbon bake furnace - alone costing $330 million - is more energy efficient and has greatly reduced the smelter’s greenhouse gas emissions.

The expansion and modernisation of BSL means the smelter is well placed to continue operating as an efficient and environmentally sustainable smelter for many years to come.

Based on one of the world’s highest-grade known zinc deposits, Dugald River is a development project in north-west Queensland, Australia

MMG announced an updated development plan for Dugald River in 2015.

The plan includes a mine production rate of 1.5Mtpa and construction of a mill and concentrator able to produce approximately 160,000 tonnes of zinc in zinc concentrate annually over an estimated 28 year mine life. This is expected to place Dugald River within one of the top ten zinc mines global when operational.

The development and operation of the Dugald River mine will provide an important employment, economic and revenue contribution for Cloncurry and Queensland over more than 30 years.
